Online Therapy Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a city with world-class universities, a thriving professional sector and a population that increasingly recognises the value of looking after mental health. Yet accessing quality psychological therapy in Edinburgh can be surprisingly difficult. Waiting lists can be long, private practices with availability are hard to find, and fitting appointments into a busy schedule often means travelling across the city during working hours.

Online therapy changes that. At The Online Psychologists, we provide private therapy with HCPC-registered clinical psychologists, delivered entirely online via secure video. You can access specialist psychological support from your home, your office or anywhere in Edinburgh and the Lothians that works for you, without waiting months to be seen.

Online therapy for people living in Edinburgh

Edinburgh is a compact city in some respects, but getting across it during peak hours is another matter. Whether you live in Morningside, Leith, Stockbridge or out in the suburbs of Corstorphine or Cramond, fitting a therapy appointment into your day usually means factoring in travel time, parking or public transport, and the disruption of being away from work or home for longer than the session itself.

For professionals working in the financial district around the Exchange or in the city centre, stepping away for a lunchtime or late-afternoon appointment with a local therapist can feel impractical. For parents in the Lothians, for shift workers at the Royal Infirmary or Western General, or for anyone whose schedule does not neatly accommodate a midweek visit to a clinic, the logistics of attending in-person therapy can become a barrier in themselves.

Online therapy removes those barriers entirely. Your session takes place wherever you are most comfortable, at a time that fits around your life. There is no commute, no waiting room and no lost time. All you need is a private space and a reliable internet connection. For people living across Edinburgh and the wider Lothians area, including East Lothian, West Lothian and Midlothian, this means access to specialist clinical psychology without being limited by geography or transport.

It also means you are not restricted to the small number of private clinical psychologists practising locally. Instead of choosing from whoever happens to have availability in Edinburgh, you can be matched with a psychologist whose specific expertise fits your needs, regardless of where they are based.

Why choose private online therapy in Edinburgh

Mental health services in Scotland operate differently from those in England. There is no equivalent of the NHS Talking Therapies programme (formerly IAPT) that provides relatively quick access to guided self-help and short-term CBT. In Scotland, if you are struggling with your mental health, the typical route is to see your GP, who may then refer you to local primary care mental health services or, for more complex difficulties, to your Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) or specialist psychology services within NHS Lothian.

The reality of this pathway is that waits can be long. NHS Lothian, like many health boards in Scotland, faces significant demand for psychological services. Waiting times of three to twelve months for an initial appointment are common, and for specialist clinical psychology input, waits can be longer still.

There are also limits to what these services are resourced to offer. Sessions may be capped at a fixed number, typically six to twelve, and there is usually little choice of therapist. The therapeutic approach may be limited to what is available within the service, often CBT delivered by a psychological therapist or assistant psychologist rather than a fully qualified clinical psychologist. For more complex presentations involving trauma, longstanding difficulties with emotions and relationships, or co-occurring difficulties, the level of specialism you need may simply not be available within the timeframe you need it.

Private online therapy offers a different route. There is no waiting list. You can start within a week. Every session is with a doctoral-level, HCPC-registered clinical psychologist, and treatment is drawn from whichever evidence-based approach is the best fit for your situation, not limited to a single model. There are no session caps, no discharge criteria to meet and no need to re-refer if your difficulties return after a break.

This is not about dismissing NHS services in Scotland, which do vital work under considerable pressure. It is about recognising that if you need support now, and the NHS cannot provide it within a reasonable timeframe, private therapy is a practical and effective alternative.

What we treat

Our clinical psychologists work with a wide range of mental health difficulties. These include difficulties that are common but often deeply disruptive, as well as more complex presentations that benefit from specialist expertise.

We regularly work with people experiencing anxiety, whether that takes the form of constant worry, physical tension, difficulty concentrating or avoidance of situations that feel overwhelming. We also treat depression, including persistent low mood, loss of motivation and the kind of emotional numbness that makes it hard to engage with daily life.

For those who have experienced traumatic events, we offer specialist treatment for PTSD and trauma, using evidence-based approaches including EMDR and trauma-focused CBT. OCD is another area of particular expertise, whether your symptoms involve intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviours or both.

Many of our clients come to us with burnout, particularly professionals in demanding roles who have reached a point where they can no longer sustain the pace. We also work extensively with low self-esteem, which often underpins other difficulties and can be addressed effectively with the right therapeutic approach.

If you are unsure whether your particular difficulty is something we can help with, get in touch and ask. We will give you an honest answer and, if we are not the right fit, we will point you in a more suitable direction.

Our therapeutic approaches

One of the advantages of working with a clinical psychologist rather than a counsellor or single-modality therapist is the breadth of treatment available to you. Our psychologists are trained across multiple evidence-based therapeutic approaches and will tailor your treatment to what the evidence says works best for your specific presentation.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely researched and effective treatments for anxiety, depression, OCD and a range of other difficulties. It focuses on identifying and changing unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour that keep difficulties going.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a specialist treatment for trauma and PTSD that helps the brain process distressing memories so they no longer trigger the same intense emotional responses. It is recommended by NICE and the World Health Organization for trauma treatment.

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) takes a different approach, helping you develop a more flexible relationship with difficult thoughts and feelings so they have less power over your behaviour. It is particularly useful for chronic anxiety, stress and burnout.

Schema therapy addresses deep-rooted patterns that often developed in childhood and continue to affect how you relate to yourself and others in adulthood. It is especially effective for long-standing difficulties with self-esteem, relationships and emotional regulation.

Your psychologist will not simply apply one approach by default. Treatment is guided by a thorough formulation of your difficulties, drawing on whichever methods will be most effective for you individually.

How online therapy works

Getting started with online therapy is straightforward. Here is how the process works, step by step.

Step one: get started. Tell us what’s bringing you here by answering a few short questions online, or contact us directly if you prefer. There is no obligation at this stage.

Step two: personal matching. Our Clinical Director, Dr Rachel Whatmough (DClinPsy, HCPC PYL25125), personally reviews every enquiry and matches you with the clinical psychologist whose expertise, therapeutic approach and style are best suited to your needs. Getting this right from the start matters, and it is something we take seriously.

Step three: your first session. Your first full 50-minute session is usually arranged within a week. Sessions take place via secure, encrypted video. You will need a private space with a stable internet connection, but beyond that, you can attend from wherever suits you best.

Step four: ongoing treatment. Therapy continues for as long as is clinically useful. There are no fixed session limits, no contracts and no minimum commitments. You and your psychologist will regularly review your progress and adjust the approach as needed.

Sessions cost £130 for 50 minutes. Payment is made before each session and we provide itemised invoices that can be used for insurance claims where applicable. Many private health insurance policies cover sessions with HCPC-registered clinical psychologists, so it is worth checking your cover if you have a policy through your employer or personally.

Online therapy vs face-to-face therapy in Edinburgh

You might be wondering whether online therapy can really match the experience of sitting in a room with a therapist. It is a reasonable question, and the evidence is clear: online therapy is as effective as face-to-face therapy for a wide range of mental health difficulties, including anxiety, depression, PTSD and OCD. A major meta-analysis published in The Lancet Psychiatry confirmed equivalent outcomes across delivery formats, and our own clinical experience supports this. You can read the full evidence on our online therapy effectiveness page.

For Edinburgh residents specifically, online therapy offers several practical advantages beyond clinical equivalence.

No travel across the city. Edinburgh’s traffic, roadworks and limited parking make getting to appointments stressful in itself. Online therapy means your session starts when you open your laptop, not twenty minutes earlier when you leave to find parking on a side street.

Easier to fit around work. If you work in the city centre or financial district, you can schedule a session during a lunch break or at the end of the working day without needing to leave the office early. If you work from home, as many Edinburgh professionals now do, the flexibility is even greater.

Access from across the Lothians. If you live in East Lothian, Midlothian or West Lothian, accessing a specialist private psychologist might otherwise mean a journey into the city centre. Online therapy makes that unnecessary.

Continuity when life changes. Edinburgh has a significant student and professional population, and people move in and out of the city regularly. With online therapy, if you relocate within the UK, your therapeutic relationship continues uninterrupted. You do not need to find a new therapist and start over.

Greater choice of psychologist. Edinburgh has a limited number of private clinical psychologists with current availability. Online therapy means you are not restricted to whoever happens to be practising locally. You can be matched with a specialist whose specific expertise fits your needs, whether that is trauma, OCD, burnout or something else entirely.

There are some situations where in-person therapy may be preferable, for example if you are in crisis or if your difficulties significantly affect your ability to engage with a screen-based format. In those cases, we will discuss the options with you honestly when you get in touch and, if needed, help you find appropriate local support within Edinburgh.
