How Aviva mental health cover works

Many Aviva health insurance policies include psychological therapy, either as part of the core plan or as an added mental health option. The details depend on the plan you or your employer chose, so it is worth checking three things with Aviva before your first session.

  • Is mental health treatment included on your plan? Log into MyAviva or call the claims number on your membership documents. Ask whether out-patient psychological therapy with a clinical psychologist is covered and whether a GP referral is needed to open a claim.
  • Do you need a pre-authorisation number? Aviva normally asks you to open a claim and get an authorisation before treatment begins. Ask for the reference number and pass it to us so we can quote it on our invoices.
  • Is there a session limit, cap or excess? Some plans cover a set number of sessions, others cover up to a financial limit per policy year, and some carry an excess. Knowing the figures up front avoids surprises later.

Once Aviva has confirmed cover, we take it from there. You attend your sessions and we invoice Aviva directly, quoting your claim reference. There is no paperwork for you to submit and no claims to chase.

Why Aviva members choose The Online Psychologists

HCPC-registered clinical psychologists

Every session is delivered by a doctoral-level clinical psychologist with at least seven years of specialist training. Aviva recognises HCPC-registered clinical psychologists for psychological therapy claims.

12 evidence-based approaches

Our psychologists work across CBT, EMDR, ACT, schema therapy, compassion-focused therapy and more, so treatment is fitted to you rather than to a single model.

We handle the Aviva admin

You do not submit invoices or chase claims. We liaise with Aviva and bill them directly on your behalf, quoting your authorisation reference.

Personal matching

Our Clinical Director, Dr Rachel Whatmough, reads every enquiry and matches you with the psychologist whose expertise suits your situation. It is a clinical judgement, not an algorithm.

No waiting lists

Most clients have their first full session within a week of getting in touch. If your Aviva cover is active, there is no reason to wait.

Online across the UK

All sessions run over secure, encrypted video. Attend from home or work anywhere in the UK, with no travel and no time off to get to a clinic.

Aviva psychologists online, anywhere in the UK

We are an online-only practice, so there is no clinic to get to and no waiting room. Your sessions happen over secure video with an HCPC-registered clinical psychologist who is recognised by Aviva, from wherever suits you.

That matters more than it sounds. A lot of the people who come to us with Aviva cover have already tried to find someone locally and hit the same two walls: long waits, and a directory full of counsellors when what the policy covers, and what they want, is a clinical psychologist. Working online means the search stops being about who happens to be nearby. Dr Rachel Whatmough matches you with the psychologist whose expertise fits, whether that is EMDR for trauma, CBT for anxiety or OCD, or ACT for the kind of stress and burnout that often sits behind an employer-funded Aviva claim.

We support Aviva members in London, Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh and everywhere in between. The administration is the same wherever you are: you open the claim, we invoice Aviva, you turn up to your sessions.

If you are not sure whether your plan covers clinical psychology, or what it would cost if it does not, our pricing page sets out the self-funded rate and how insurance fits alongside it.
