Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT)

CFT helps people struggling with shame, self-criticism and difficult emotions by developing a more compassionate inner voice.

What is it?

Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is an integrative, evidence-based approach designed to help people develop a kinder and more supportive relationship with themselves. Drawing on evolutionary psychology, attachment theory, neuroscience, and mindfulness, CFT focuses on rebalancing our “threat,” “drive,” and “soothing” systems. Our experienced Clinical Psychologists are trained to use CFT to address the impact of self-criticism and shame, creating space for compassion, courage, and resilience to grow.

When it helps

CFT is particularly helpful for people who struggle with harsh self-criticism, perfectionism, or persistent feelings of shame and guilt. It is also effective in the context of trauma, anxiety, and depression, where negative self-judgements can become entrenched. By strengthening the soothing and compassionate system, CFT helps reduce psychological distress and fosters greater emotional balance and wellbeing.

What to expect

In sessions, your psychologist may guide you through compassionate imagery, soothing rhythm breathing, or reflective writing exercises designed to shift how you relate to yourself and others. Therapy is collaborative and sensitive to your individual needs, helping you gradually replace patterns of self-judgement with warmth, understanding, and kindness. Over time, these practices support lasting changes in how you think, feel, and connect with both yourself and those around you.
