Interpersonal Therapy (IPT)

IPT is a structured therapy focusing on relationships, life transitions, and communication patterns, aiming to reduce distress and strengthen support networks.

What is it?

Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) helps you understand how your relationships and social connections affect your mood and wellbeing. By focusing on patterns of communication and the impact of life transitions, IPT supports you in finding healthier ways of relating to others and coping with change.

When it helps

IPT has strong evidence for treating depression, grief and bereavement, interpersonal conflict, and difficulties adjusting to new life roles (such as becoming a parent, retirement, or divorce). It can also be helpful when distress feels linked to ongoing relationship patterns or unresolved losses.

What to expect

Together with your psychologist, you’ll identify the key interpersonal themes affecting your mental health. Sessions may focus on building communication skills, managing conflict, processing emotions, and navigating life changes. The emphasis is on practical, real-world changes in your relationships and daily life that can improve mood and resilience.
