Mindfulness & Compassion-Based Interventions
Mindfulness involves developing present-moment awareness and acceptance, often combined with compassion training to increase emotional balance and resilience.
What is it?
Mindfulness-based approaches teach skills for paying attention to the present moment with openness and curiosity. They can be used as a stand-alone therapy or woven into other approaches such as CBT, CFT, or ACT. The focus is on developing awareness of thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations without judgement, which can reduce stress and support emotional balance.
When it helps
Mindfulness has strong evidence for managing stress, burnout, rumination, and preventing relapse in depression. It can also enhance general wellbeing and resilience, and is often helpful for people living with chronic health conditions, high emotional reactivity, or difficulty switching off from worries.
What to expect
Your psychologist may guide you through practices such as breathing exercises, body scans, mindful awareness of daily activities, or compassion-focused imagery. These tools help calm the nervous system, regulate emotions, and create space to respond differently to unhelpful thoughts and feelings. Over time, mindfulness can become a set of everyday skills you carry with you beyond therapy.
