EMDR Therapy

EMDR is a structured, evidence-based therapy recommended by NICE for treating PTSD.

What is it?

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they become less distressing and easier to live with. Using bilateral stimulation (such as guided eye movements, sounds, or taps), EMDR supports the brain’s natural healing processes, allowing overwhelming memories to be integrated more adaptively. Our highly trained Clinical Psychologists are experienced in delivering EMDR safely and effectively, tailoring the approach to each person’s needs and history.

When it helps

EMDR is highly effective for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex trauma, childhood abuse or neglect, birth trauma, medical trauma, and distress following assaults or accidents. It is also increasingly used to treat difficulties such as anxiety, phobias, and complicated grief. For many people, EMDR provides relief when other therapies have not been sufficient, helping to unlock stuck memories and reduce ongoing triggers.

What to expect

Therapy usually begins with a careful assessment and stabilisation phase, where your psychologist ensures you feel safe, supported, and equipped with coping strategies before trauma work begins. During processing, you will be guided to bring aspects of the traumatic memory to mind while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation. This combination allows the memory to be “reprocessed,” so it loses its overwhelming emotional intensity and new, more balanced beliefs can take its place. Over time, many people notice a reduction in distress, greater emotional stability, and a sense of resolution that allows them to move forward with their lives.
